Surgical Gown

Our Quality Standards for surgical gowns are guided by:

  • American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F2407
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
  • Association of the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)
  • European standard EN 13795

The selection and determination are often decided by the hospital OR internal policies.

The Infection Control team together with OR management team may collaborate to

come up with guidelines and protocol for surgical procedures in the OR. Often gowning

procedures are included. In the absence of such guidelines, listed below are some

suggestions for the selection of surgical gowns based on AAMI protection standards.

AAMI 2

Generally for minor and simple procedures. Sometimes used for dental surgeries too

AAMI 3

For most general surgeries that are NOT long duration or involve a lot of fluid

AAMI 4

For major surgeries taking long duration and involving much fluid, e.g. knee/hip replacement, cardiovascular, brain etc. Also involving infectious diseases such as hepatitis and HIV
